SteaScree is a small open-source tool that uploads screenshots taken outside Steam's in-game overlay to the Steam Cloud. Pick the pictures, choose a game, and SteaScree does the rest.

The problem: Steam gives you 20 GB of cloud storage for screenshots, but only uploads the ones its overlay took. Those have specific file names, live in specific folders and are listed in screenshots.vdf. Anything else fails with "Steam Cloud may be temporarily unavailable". SteaScree prepares your screenshots so Steam accepts them.

  1. Choose your Steam folder, if you have more than one.
  2. Choose your Steam account, if several people share the computer.
  3. Choose a game, or enter its ID.
  4. Add screenshots.
  5. Copy them to the game's Steam folder. Repeat steps 3–5 for other games.
  6. Register all copied screenshots with Steam. They're now ready to upload.

Why skip the overlay? Third-party tools often take better screenshots, can be automated, and work in games where the overlay doesn't. You may also want screenshots of games outside your Steam library.

Super Resolution shots from Photo Mode in the NVIDIA app are too big for the Steam Cloud. SteaScree spots them and offers to scale them down to the largest size Steam accepts. Isn't it gorgeous?
